Big Finish bringing Sophie Aldred back as Ace in new Doctor Who spinoff Class audio adventures

June 27th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Oh, this is a turn up for the books! Sophie Aldred is returning to the world of Doctor Who as Ace!

The actress played Ace in the Sylvester McCoy era (I had such a crush on her!) and was lat seen getting into the TARDIS int he final episode of the Survival storyline (1989). However, as the series then went on hiatus until McCoy turned up in Doctor Who: The Movie in 1996, what became of ACE isn’t really known.

Sure, we know the eventually plan was for her to go to Gallifrey and train to be a Timelord (Timelady) and we also know that she ended up in 18th century France. She was also alluded to in The Sarah Jane Adventures, but her ultimate fate has never been confirmed.

And sad to say, her new appearance in a Big Finish Audio Drama based around the (cancelled) Class TV Series is unlikely to answer any questions as it takes place after the Remembrance of the Daleks storyline and will see the Doctor’s baseball bat brandishing companion crossing paths with the Daleks once again.

That all said, it will be great to hear her in the role again.

Here’s the skinny:

The Doctor Who spin-off [Class] created by Young Adult author Patrick Ness will return in six new audio tales from Big Finish Productions, coming August 2018.

The spin-off, which consisted of one series of eight episodes broadcast in 2016, is set in Coal Hill School (later Academy), introduced in the first television episode of Doctor Who, An Unearthly Child, in 1963. Coal Hill School has had numerous appearances ever since, including the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, but it still has more secrets hidden in its walls…

Class is now returning on audio with six new adventures made in arrangement with BBC Studios. Set during the television series, Class is back in session with the original cast: Greg Austin plays Charlie Smith, Fady Elsayed plays Ram Singh, Sophie Hopkins plays April MacLean, Vivian Oparah plays Tanya Adeola, Jordan Renzo plays Matteusz Andrzejewski and Katherine Kelly plays Miss Andrea Quill.

1.3 Tell Me You Love Me by Scott Handcock

2.1 Everyone Loves Reagan by Tim Foley
2.2 Now You Know… by Tim Leng
2.3 In Remembrance by Guy Adams

Spread over two volumes, the six new adventures find the students of Coal Hill Academy reunited and crossing paths with characters from the Doctor Who universe.

There’s also a treat for fans of Seventh Doctor companion Ace, played by Sophie Aldred, as she returns to Coal Hill in an adventure following up her previous skirmish with the Daleks in the Doctor Who television episode Remembrance of the Daleks.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
