We are big Doctor Who fans. No, really. But one of the things that we believe the series could do with less of is the Doctor/companion will they/won’t they? dynamic… and it looks like Peter Capaldi is taking the character back to basics… in more ways than we thought.
The actor, who is 56 compared to Matt Smith’s 28, told the Sunday Times Magazine via The Guardian: “There’ll be no flirting, that’s for sure.”
“It’s not what this Doctor’s concerned with. It’s quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, ‘I want no Papa-Nicole moments’ (see the video below if this reference is lost on you). I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant.”
But he added more about the series’ new direction too: “It’s going to be a bit different from what we’ve seen over recent years. A bit more gravity.
“Some situations are more sombre and I think there are more rooted dramatic scenes. Over the past two or three years, which I’ve loved, there has often been a breathless vigour; we still have that attack, but we have another level of drama, another tone. And the scenes are longer.”
Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on 23 August
