Despite a recent trailer, we still know only a few things about the upcoming Justice League movie. However, we do know the main villain of the piece, and that’s Steppenwolf, aka one of the generals of Darkseid, and that he will be played by Ciaran Hinds.
What’s interesting though, is that Hinds has noted that the motivation for Steppenwolf isn’t what you might think it is. In an interview with The Independent he stated:
“He’s old, tired, still trying to get out of his own enslavement to Darkseid, [but] he has to keep on this line to try and take over worlds,” he revealed.”
This is fascinating as Steppenwolf has often been portrayed as a happy and loyal servant to Darkseid, willing to do anything his master wishes, this appears to be a new take on the character.
He also joked about why he thinks he got the part of as Steppenwolf:
“They were great fans of Excalibur, Zack and his team. Maybe that’s how I got the role [in Justice League]! Who knows?,” Hinds speculated. “There’s a bit when they’re walking in Gotham City and suddenly on a marquee of a cinema you see Excalibur playing.”
