Classic Next Generation characters set for Star Trek: Lower Decks?

More cool news about the upcoming Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series on CBS All-access.

I reported a few weeks back that the show was set during the Next Generation period of Trek lore and was definitely set within the recognised continuity.

And now today, it seems it may go even deeper than that.

Writer Mike McMahan has said it will focus on “the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships” in the year 2380, which places it after the events of Star Trek Nemesis.

However, speaking to EW, he said: “There are a lot of recognisable characters in the galaxy at that point.

“Next Gen is my favourite era and, as a huge Trek fan, I would definitely want to try to use some of them so that I could not only build out the world, but also work with some of my heroes.”

Before teasingly adding: “But I can’t get more specific than that. You’ll have to wait and see.”

Star Trek has seen several familiar Next Gen stars return in Picard, so the idea of Picard, Riker and the rest popping up in animated form doesn’t seem that out of the question.

McMahan also confirmed that Lower Decks, despite it’s appearance, is for adults more than their younglings – sorry, wrong franchise: “It’s definitely not a kids show, but only because it’s a little bit more complex than a kid show would be.

“The fun of Rick and Morty is that it breaks down sci-fi tropes and is told through Rick Sanchez, who has a very specific, chaotic, nihilistic lens. Lower Decks treats mythological sci-fi things just as important as a regular Trek show, while finding new stories to tell — just from a different angle.

“It’s not disassembling mythological sci-fi things. It’s treating them as important for everybody on the starship as it would be in a regular star Trek show.”

It sounds like Lower Decks could be Trek via Rick and Morty and I have to say, as a big Rick Sanchez fan, I find myself more and more excited for this show the closer it gets.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is due to beam down to CBS All Access later this year.
