CONFIRMED: Starz bringing John Wick series The Continental to the small screen… and Keanu reeves will appear

John Wick

You may recall that in June last year we reported that a John Wick spin-off TV series was in the works based around The Continental, the hotel that lies at the heart of the Wick universe and we also reported that Reeves himself may appear in the series (here).

Well, it looks like it’s all true as Starz has announced during the Starz’s portion of the TCA winter press tour.that it and Lionsgate TV are developing ‘The Continental’:

Writer/producer Chris Collins (Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, The Man in the High Castle) will write the series and serve as showrunner. The team behind the film franchise will executive produce, including John Wick star Keanu Reeves, along with Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk (the John Wick film franchise, The Town, Sicario), Chad Stahelski (John Wick co-director and John Wick: Chapter 2 director), John Wick franchise screenwriter Derek Kolstad, along with Collins and David Leitch (John Wick co-director, Deadpool 2). Stahelski will direct the premiere episode.

Collins expands the universe in the series by focusing on the Continental Hotel and those who find refuge under its roof. Set in a hyper-real version of Los Angeles, the series maintains the urgency of the action along with the dry humor from the John Wick movies, producers say.

And it seems that the idea is to make it fit very neatly into the world of John Wick according to Chris Albrecht, Starz president and CEO: “The Continental promises to include the thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets that fans have come to expect in the John Wick movie franchise as well as introducing some new, darkly compelling characters who inhabit this underground world.”

However, even more interestingly, it seems that not only is Keanu Reeves an executive producer, but as we previously reported, he’ll also have a role in the show at some point: “you can expect to see him at some point of the series,” Starz’s head of programming Carmi Zlotnik said.

Albrecht added: “the show and the movies exist side by side.

“[The Continental is] truly unlike anything else on TV [and] promises to include the thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets that fans have come to expect in the John Wick movie franchise as well as introducing some new, darkly compelling characters who inhabit this underground world.”

Well, that sounds good enough to us and, yes, we’re pretty excited. Are you?

As we get more details on The Continental so will you.
