The Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in a modern-day London was a mixed bag for me… and it seems like there’s more to come.
The series was perfectly cast and ranged from superb to utterly dire and even at one stage put the characters in 1880s London but it was short-lived with four series of three episodes and a special but it made its way into the public consciousness and is a show that many have hoped would eventually return.
And now it looks like it might just happen.
Steven Moffat wanted Richard E Grant and Paul McGann as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson! What?!?
Producer Sue Vertue has been talking about the series and has said it will return… someday.
“We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it,” she says, “I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you. It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.”
Last year co-creator Steven Moffat said he’d love to do more but Cumberbatch and Freeman are far too busy these days: “They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?”.
Recently other co-creator Mark Gatiss said he’d love to get them back to do a Sherlock movie, saying: “We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult.”
With all the creatives behind the show still keen to bring it back and keeping it fresh in their mind, it’s likely that someday we will travel back to 221B Baker St with the world’s greatest detective but for now, the game may be afoot but Holmes and Watson are nowhere to be found.
Would you like to see Sherlock return? Let me know…
