David Tennant and Neil Gaiman talk Good Omens series 3 and how to make it happen

August 11th, 2023 by Marc Comments

It looks like fans of David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s Crowley and Aziraphale may have more good news to come in the future.

Based on the much-loved 1990 novel by the late Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens arrived to much praise in 2019 and gave us a rather lovely adaptation of the source material with some inspired casting throughout, not least of Sheen and Tennant and fans, like myself who red the novel when it came out in 1990 and loved it, were very, very happy with the results.

But we never expected more as Pratchett died after the first novel, so we assumed that was the end of the angels’ adventures, however, in June 2021 Gaiman explained that a series 2 was coming and it was the plan, with Pratchett’s blessing, all along, saying: “Terry [Pratchett] was clear on what he wanted from Good Omens on the telly. He wanted the story told, and if that worked, he wanted the rest of the story told.”

Neil Gaiman just confirmed Good Omens 2 is coming with the late Terry Pratchett’s blessing

And there was much rejoicing.

But the rejoicing may not be over yet as Tennant, in a recent interview, intimated that Gaiman has a plan on where the characters go next and it seems Tennant is in on the secret… but he’s not telling: “Oh, Neil Gaiman knows exactly where he wants to take it,” he says.

“If you’re working with people like Gaiman, I wouldn’t try to tamper with that creative void. Were he to ask my opinion, that would be a different thing, but I can’t imagine he would. He’s known these characters longer than me and what’s interesting is what he does with them. That’s the bit that I’m desperate to know. I do know where Crowley might end up next, but it would be very wrong if I told you.”

And, if that’s not enough, Gaiman himself has confirmed that yes, a third outing is ready to happen and if it wasn’t for the current strike in Hollywood – and maybe more fans finding the series – it might have already been announced; when asked about a third season on Twitter, Gaiman had this to say: “It’s planned and plotted and if there wasn’t a Writers Strike on I’d be writing it right now.

“Ways to help make Good Omens Season 3 happen are A) watch Season 2, B) get people who know nothing of Good Omens to start watching S1, and C) encourage the studios to negotiate with WGA.”

So, there you have it, if you want more, you have to show support and I know that counts for me too as I haven’t gotten time to watch series 2 yet, but I plan on correcting that as soon as humanly possible.

While Crowley is leery as to why the archangel has come to the bookshop, Aziraphale is keen to solve the mystery behind Gabriel’s condition. However, hiding the archangel from both Heaven and Hell quickly disrupts their lives in unforeseen ways. To solve this mystery and thwart Heaven and Hell in the process, the duo will need more than a miracle; they’ll need to once again rely on each other.

The series stars Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Jon Hamm, Doon Mackichan, Gloria Obianyo, Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Nina Sosanyam, Liz Carr, Quelin Sepulveda, and Shelley Conn.

Good Omens returns July 28th, exclusively on Prime Video.
