Ooooooh… a movie franchise that I enjoyed before it met its untimely end, was Percy Jackson.
The franchise has two instalments – Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters – which were a lot of fun but sadly, never reached the Harry Potter levels that was hoped for.
However, it seems Disney+ has seen the potential as they have given a Percy Jackson series the green light.
Author of the book series, Rick Riordan – along with his wife, Becky – took to Twitter (below) to announce the series: “We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”
He also added this to the post:
The full series consists of The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian.
Like Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, Riordan has also published the companion books The Demigod Files and The Demigod Diaries, so there is plenty of material for Disney to run with.
The movies that already exist were made by 20th Century Fox, so the rights to the property came over to Disney when the merged the two but it’s not likely the movies and TV series will be related and this will be a fresh take on the story.
Pssst. Hey, demigods . . . pic.twitter.com/7ep4aeyS3I
