Doctor Who spoilers from John Hurt? And more hints to Capaldi’s take on the character…

September 10th, 2013 by Marc Comments

If you cast your minds back far enough you may remember that John Hurt was the one who let the cat out of the bag regarding his role in the Doctor Who Anniversary Special by revealing he was the ‘missing link’ that came between the eighth and ninth Doctors (McGann and Eccleston) but has he revealed something else  in a tweet about Peter Capaldi?

He recently tweeted: ‘Congratulations Peter Capaldi. I’m suboth and we will have a lot of fun.’ While we are not sure what the typo means, but it certainly seems like he’s saying they will be appearing together onscreen… or are we reading too much into it?

The tweet was quickly taken down and replaced with:  “Congratulations to Peter Capaldi and to the BBC. Another splendid Doctor!” Much safer, no? But also very different from what he originally tweeted.

So what does this mean? Is Hurt still involved in Who? Will we see him next year too? Will he appear with Capaldi’s Doctor? Or was it a mistake? All will be revealed between now and Christmas. Probably.

In other news, Hurt has been talking about Doctor Who and being in it: “I had no idea that Doctor Who had got so huge. I just thought, ‘Brilliant, I’ll be a Doctor!’ I was suddenly – what do they call it? You start ‘trending’. This is all new to me! Of course you have to remember that the Doctors are all one person, so I’m not outside of that. I can’t talk about it, but I will say I was really impressed when I did it.

“Both the previous doctors – Matt Smith and David Tennant – boy, are they good at it. Whoa-wee! They are so quick, and there’s a huge amount of learning and no time to learn it in. All that fake scientific nonsense. Terribly difficult to learn.” (Thanks to Dark Horizons for this info)

Finally, Doctor Who showrunner Stephen Moffat has been talking a bit more about Peter Capaldi’s take on the Doctor, which is being written right now:  “His appetites and his enthusiasm will change. And that’s sort of what I’m writing about now in Matt’s last episode, the fact that he’s terribly aware that he’s about to be rewritten. And it’s frightening…”

Will we see another passionate farewell ala Tennant perhaps?

And finally, a new picture gallery is available here of Matt Smith’s final appearance as the Doctor in the Christmas Special – complete with a wig!
