Get ready for the new daily show

Doctor Who star Sophie Aldred’s Ace is back for The Power of The Doctor in a very familiar get up!

As we all get ready for The Power of The Doctor later this month, Jodie Whittaker’s final outing as The Doctor and also (yay!) showrunner Chris Chibnall’s goodbye to the long-running sci-fi classic, we have a cool new look at a highly anticipated returning character.

The images, from SFX Magazine, show the return of Sophie Aldred’s Ace McShane – who traveled with Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor back in the 80s – and Janet Fielding’s Tegan who traveled with both Tom Baker’s and Peter Davidson’s Doctors in the 1970s and 1980s.

We have already seen these two briefly in the episode’s trailer, below, but the new image, above, is notable for a really cool reason.

In the new image, Ace is wearing her old bomber jacket, complete with badges, patches and, yes, Blue Peter badge and is armed with a baseball bat. Oh, and according to Aldred, this is the original jacket she wore in the 80s as she still had it all these years later: “[Costume designer] Ray Holman said, ‘Can we borrow this to copy?’ and I said, ‘Why copy it? We’ll just use the jacket. You might have to sew the badges on again, though.’ Because the badges notoriously always fell off,” she says.

Aldred’s Ace became a big part of Doctor Who lore because she beat a Dalek with a baseball bat (here) in Remembrance of the Daleks and later, in extended lore, traveled to Gallifrey after her adventures with the Doctor and eventually became a Timelord. It’s unclear if The Power of The Doctor will acknowledge this or if it’ll create a new fate for the character.

All I know is that in 1988 when I discovered Doctor Who with McCoy (always will be my Doctor) and Aldred, Ace was a real favourite for my impressionable young mind… and I cannot wait to see her return!

Let’s hope the episode, which will lead into the 60th-anniversary episodes, is better than Chibnall’s output so far… Whittaker deserves at the very least, a good send-off.
