FX artists sought for new animated Ghostbusters series at Netflix

Since being announced during Ghostbusters Day 2022, below, we’ve been closely tracking every update on the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series from Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix, writes Jason at Ghostbusters News

From early development teases, last summer’s official greenlight, and confirmation that the show will be aimed at younger audiences, it’s clear this project is slowly but surely taking shape. Now, thanks to a new job listing from Sony, we’ve got another behind-the-scenes update, and while it may be a small one, it’s further proof the series is still deep in development.

GHOSTBUSTERS DAY 2024: Netflix give brief update on Ghostbusters series

Sony Pictures Animation is currently hiring a CG Supervisor for an “unannounced CG animated project.” While the listing doesn’t name the series outright, the studio’s official recruiting page on X has already made the connection clear, posting:

“We’re looking for an experienced FX Artist to help define and drive the visual effects language for our upcoming CG animated Ghostbusters series.”

The position will help guide the technical and creative execution of the project, collaborating with the production team, animation vendors, and Sony’s in-house VFX artists to bring its ghostly world to life.

As for where things currently stand, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan offered a behind-the-scenes peek late last year, saying:

“We are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”

Exciting update on Netflix Ghostbusters animated movie

Kenan and longtime Ghostbusters collaborator Jason Reitman, who co-wrote Afterlife and Frozen Empire, are serving as executive producers on the series. Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Elliott Kalan is on board as writer, showrunner, and fellow executive producer. According to Reitman, the animated series will “navigate an unexplored era and decade of Ghostbusters canon.”

There’s no official release date for the series, and based on this new listing, we’re likely a ways off from seeing it drop on Netflix. That said, with development continuing, we’re hopeful that, at the very least, a first look will come sometime later this year.

As previously reported, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are also teaming up to expand the Ghostbusters universe with a full-length animated feature film. First announced also as part of Ghostbusters Day 2022, Reitman and Kenan teased the movie would feature an “all-new team” and offer “a whole new take” on the franchise. While updates have been sparse since then, director Kris Pearn is attached, known for his work on Sony’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Netflix’s The Willoughbys.
