Gotham casts Game of Thrones star, Alexander Siddig, as Ra’s Al Ghul

My personal favourite Batman villain is Ra’s Al Ghul… I’ve always loved the character and felt that, out of all the rogues Batman fights, Ra’s is the one who is most evenly matched.

And a couple of years ago when Matt Nable played the character (minus some of his more incredible attributes i.e. immortality due to the Lazarus pit) on Arrow, I thought it was a pinnacle for comic book characters on the small screen.

And now it seems we are about to get a new Ra’s.

Gotham has cast Game of Thrones’ Doran Martell himself, actor Alexander Siddig as Ra’s, a recurring character:

The supervillain will first appear later this season, as Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) pulls the veil off the mysterious Court of Owls organization and discovers that the man pulling the strings is the enigmatic and powerful Ra’s al Ghul. With his past shrouded in mystery, Ra’s uses cunning and deception to lay waste to his foes. As the leader of an international criminal organization known as the League of Shadows, Ra’s will prove himself to be Bruce’s most dangerous adversary yet.

It’s difficult to call what way Ra’s will be portrayed in Gotham… will he be a mentor to young Bruce and set him on his way to become Batman ala Batman Begins? Or will he be an evil genius who will see Bruce’s legacy as something to crush?

We hope he trains young Bruce in this version, but it’s unlikely Ra’s will be a supernatural character as Gotham, so far at least, has hidden behind scientific reasons for everything… even bringing back the dead.

No word on when Ra’s will appear yet, but I, for one, cannot wait.

Gotham returns on Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
