While we reported a while back (here) that Greg Berlanti – the man behind Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl – was making a Black Lightning series only it would be with FOX and not connected to The CW shows, it looks like all that has been turned around.
Latest reports are that FOX have decided not to movie ahead with the series – probably because they already have Gotham and Lucifer and are now committed to an X-Men TV series with Bryan Singer and Marvel (here) – and The CW have stepped in.
Remember that the Archie series, Riverdale, was originally set for FOX too and Supergirl was a CBS series for the first year and both are now part of The CW (pity they didn’t do the same with Constantine. Yes, we need to let it go), so this isn’t totally out of the usual.
The series is being described as: “the CW’s DC universe’s first major African-American superhero. Black Lightning would be the only black superhero toplining his own broadcast series and the second currently on TV, joining Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix.
“Additionally, while the focus of the series is on Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, he has younger daughters also are main characters, an area that would likely be explored further for the CW.
“Written by the husband-and-wife duo of Akil and Brock Akil based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.”
The CW is without doubt our favourite comicbook universe on the big and small screen right now, and the thought of it growing with the addition of Black Lightning has us more than excited… just think of the crossovers!
Let us know what you guys all think.
