Potentially big news from the world of Doctor Who today as it seems we could be coming up to a new regeneration for our favourite Time Lord.
Yes, word is that Jodie Whittaker, the thirteenth Doctor, is getting ready to hand over the TARDIS keys to a new face.
Now, there’s not much more known on this for now except that “It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration.
“Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It’s very exciting.”
It is rumoured that she is leaving to pursue other roles, which is, of course, fair enough.
Fans will know that Whittaker has had a bumpy ride on the series that as completely out of her hands. The actress became the first female to step into the famous shoes and, while there was a certain corner of the fandom that had a problem with that because, well, she’s female, the big problem that saw viewing figures drop consistently over the last three years was simply awful writing.
Now that’s not to say there weren’t a few fun episodes because, while none come to mind, I’m sure there were, but the very divisive writing (I’m not getting into it here) did a lot of damage to the fandom and, for that reason, many will welcome this as good news.
On thing worth pointing out is that, should this be true (and I think it is), it’s not unusual for a Doctor to only stay three seasons, so it’s hardly indicative of the star being forced to leave.
On the rumoured departure, the BBC said they “won’t be commenting on any speculation around Jodie’s future on the show”.
That response is many things but a denial isn’t one of them.
Sadly, the truly upsetting news is that showrunner Chris Chibnall is set to remain after her departure.
With the recent news that Liverpool comedian John Bishop is joining the cast next season as Dan (here), I’m wondering if perhaps there is more to the casting than we’re being told… or maybe not.
What do you all think? I Whittaker standing down? Let me know your thoughts, guys..
