This is a rumour I’ve heard bouncing around for a while but didn’t dare allow myself to hope, but now we have a pretty reliable source saying that HBO Max are looking into making a new Batman: the Animated series sequel.
Batman: The Animated series ran from 1992 to 1995 and as well as leading to Justice League, Superman and others, it already had a sequel series in the form of Batman Beyond which ran from 1999 to 2001 as well as several animated movies and, as well as all this, it defined a generation’s love for animation and Batman.
The 1992 release tied into the release of Batman Returns (and even featured a Penguin with webbed fingers like the movie) and was sort of an else-worlds sequel to the movie, building on the success of the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton movies although it could be argued it soon overshadowed the movies and carved out it’s own corner of the fandom that is still adored to this day.
Now, this new series would make sense given that we know Michael Keaton is looking at returning as Batman/Bruce Wayne in The Flash movie and maybe more (here) and we know there’s a whole period of time before the end of the Animated series and the beginning of Batman Beyond that can be explored. Oh, and anyone other than Kevin Conroy returning to play the role is out of the question – I think the majority of you will agree.
Anyway, what is the news?
Well, on the Fatman Beyond Podcast (below) Smith and co-host Marc Bernardin are chatting when Bernardin dropped this into the conversation: “HBO Max is looking at making a Batman: The Animated Series sequel that they want to continue that forward [improving subscriptions].”
Smith added: “I’m not involved, but I too have heard this and I’ve heard this from very reliable people.”
This is very exciting news and don’t forget it could also mean we might get Mark Hamill back in his second greatest role… The Joker!
Anyway, in case you can’t tell, I’m very excited for this news… but are you? Let me know your thoughts, guys.
