Killer Klowns from Outer Space is one of those consummate cult classics that was always destined to live once more. Although it’s continuing to be discovered by young, freaked out audiences across the globe nearly thirty years after its original release, original director and all-round Klown puppet-master Stephen Chiodo is bringing back his much-loved work as a ‘requel.’
No, that’s not a typo – Chiodo is avoiding a big screen remake in favour of a sequel/reboot hybrid for television. Talks of a Killer Klowns sequel have been fervent for years now, but nothing has ever been officially negotiated. Now though, it looks like Killer klowns may be on the cusp of being resurrected and pulled from the bottomless chasm of under-appreciated horror gems. Chiodo recently appeared on the Movie Crypt Podcast (via Squareyed) to offer an update on the property. Below is what he offered on the matter:
“Right now, we are currently pursuing a long arch series for cable. We wondered, should we do a sequel to the first one or do we do a remake? We came up with a ‘requel’ – it’s a sequel and a remake. We’ve been developing this for a while. It’s a trilogy in four parts, and it really follows the continuing adventures of new people who are experiencing this phenomenon of a Klown invasion, and once in a while you see some of the old guys pop up and hear their stories – find out what happened over the last 25 years. It’s fucking great.”
So, Chiodo’s comments are about as puzzling as the plot of Killer Klowns. It’s not clear if it’s a TV show or a ‘trilogy in four parts’ – whatever that means. Yes, although he has offered an update, we remain in a haze as to what to expect exactly.
In the original Killer Klowns from Outer Space, when teenagers Mike (Grant Cramer) and Debbie (Suzanne Snyder) see a comet crash outside their sleepy small town, they investigate and discover a pack of murderous aliens who look very much like circus clowns. They try to warn the local authorities, but everyone assumes their story is a prank. Meanwhile, the clowns set about harvesting and eating as many people as they can. It’s not until they kidnap Debbie that Mike decides it’s up to him to stop the clowns’ bloody rampage.
Priceless, B-movie gold.
