A few weeks back we learned that Scooby-Doo’s own Velma Dinkley was set to get her own adult animated series on HBO Max (here) and, if it’s anywhere near as good as the Harley Quinn animated series, then count us in.
Now, today we have some new details thanks to the president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, Tom Ascheim who gave a presentation (below) on upcoming animated projects at Cartoon Network, Boomerang and HBO Max.
The series, called Velma is created by and will star Mindy Kaling, star and writer on the hit US version of The Office, and will throw some pretty big changes into the familiar formula of the world of Scooby and the gang.
This new version of the character will be of East Asian descent – as Kaling herself is – and will feature ‘no dog’ and ‘no van’.
Now, this is a pretty big departure from the established Velma we know but we know that Kaling is a talented writer and actress, so we will wait and see how it goes. We’ve seen some complain that Scooby and the Mystery Machine don’t exist int his universe and we don’t think that’s the case here, we just think it means they’ll not feature in the show and, well, we love a bit of Scoob and the gang, but we love Velma too and look forward to seeing what she gets up to when she’s not unmasking ghosts in rickety old houses.
Thoughts? I want to hear them all.
