It looks like Sherlock will not be following the footsteps of Doctor Who or James Bond and recasting a new actor when the current one leaves…
Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat, speaking to Variety, has confirmed that the detective is one man only: “Once Benedict Cumberbatch gives up Sherlock what are we going to do? We are going to stop, that’s what we are going to do,” he said.
Bad times if Martin Freeman’s John Watson doesn’t want to leave…
The show which has a one-off special this New Year’s Day and is getting ready to film its fourth season, is a massive hit for the BBC and it’s nice to know that the inevitable cash-crab to replace Cumberbatch isn’t (at least currently) on the cards.
Moffat was keen to point out that Sherlock wasn’t as ever-lasting as his other show, Doctor Who: “Most shows have a built-in mortality. But here is a show that sheds us all like scales; a show that can make you feel everything except indispensable. It will carry on forever, because you can replace every part of it.
“Doctor Who is the all-time perfectly evolved television show. It’s a television predator designed to survive any environment because you can replace absolutely everybody. Most shows you can’t do that with.”
Are you glad Sherlock will end when Cumberbatch leaves or would you like to see different actors’ takes on it? Let us know…
