Oh, boy… this could be BIG!

Netflix has announced they are making a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series and we’re so excited!

On top of that, the creators of the animated series – which is without question on of our favourite animated shows of all time – Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will act as showrunners and exec producers on the new series.

Hopefully, the folks behind the ill-fated Last Airbender movie will not be involved because it was, well, it was crap.

Konietzko and DiMartino had this to say on the new series: “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.

“We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

We’re curious where this series will go as, while we cannot wait to get back into the universe of the Avatar, we would like to see more than just a retelling, perhaps something that runs alongside the original series or from another character’s viewpoint.

But we know they said ‘retelling’ so we’re not really figuring it’ll be a wildly different take.

Either way, we’re looking forward to this…

Here’s some of the show’s early concept art featuring And, the Last Airbender, and Apa, his flying bison… if you don’t know, you need to check out the original show.

More and and when we get it…
