Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series may be pretty close to airing…

September 6th, 2018 by Marc Comments

We’ve known for a while now that Netflix were working on a Dark Crystal series to go back and all the story before the iconic 80s  and now it seems it may be pretty close.

But now, at DragonCon 2018 The Jim Henson Company’s Brian Henson has revealed that the show, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is well under way: “It’s been shooting since last November — it’s so cool that Netflix could get behind it in such a big way so that we can do it RIGHT. I say we, but I’ve been doing Happytime Murders, so it’s really my sister’s [Lisa Henson] and Halle Stanford‘s project. They’ve really put together a great, great time in London.”

Talking about how the show will be put together, Henson reveals that it’s pure old school, sets, puppetry, stages, actors, the whole deal: “I’ll be honest, I thought those days were gone. I thought by the ’80s, the idea of being able to walk into a stage and see an incredible fantasy world realized was just long gone because of CG and everything like that. But they’ve REALLY done it right. It’s GREAT. The workmanship is just stunning, the artistic quality is RIGHT THERE again; what I thought maybe was lost, it’s still there. They’ll be shooting for another few weeks, and then there will be a huge amount of post-production.”

As for the time of when the series takes place? He said: “[he looks to the back of the room] Don’t say anything? Ok, well, we’ve said it’s a prequel, and it’s not an immediate prequel, so it doesn’t end when the movie started. It takes place significantly earlier than when the movie took place.”

We’re big fans of the original movie so this has us all pretty excited… we like to think Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are connected in some weird way. Maybe someday we’ll see another Labyrinth story too.

Oh, but before we go, Henson had a little tease regarding Farscape and the continuation/finale fans have cried out for for years, saying that, “if all goes well, we may see the continued space saga maybe finding a home on Netflix as well”.

Now, wouldn’t that be a thing?

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is set in the world of Thra. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world. The series will be shot in the U.K. and will star an ensemble of creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer.

The series will be produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Louis Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as a producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Feature film director Leterrier (Now You See Me) will direct the series, while Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Life in a Year), and Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost) will pen the script and serve as co-executive producers.

“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects,” said Cindy Holland, vp original content at Netflix. “I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”

“Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of The Dark Crystal and has an incredible creative vision for the series. He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life,” added Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.

“Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.”
