It has been a year since we last saw a Doctor Who episode. It was last Christmas in fact with ‘The Husband of River Song’. We have seen The Doctor more recently than that in the first episode of the new TV spinoff Class. So any new news on Doctor Who is certainly a welcome.

A new poster of this years Christmas episode, titled; “The return of Doctor Mysterio” has been released (above).

This special sees The Doctor in New York City where he teams up with Nardole, played by Matt Lucas, an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield, and another unlikely ally known as the Ghost, to save Manhattan from a group of brain swapping aliens.

Some people may remember Lucas’s character Nardole, who first made his appearance last year in the Christmas special and will be one of if not the first minor character to appear in a subsequent Christmas special. It is therefore likely he will be playing the ‘companion role’ in this episode.

This Christmas episode comes prior to the release of season 10, where a new companion and new adventures await the doctor. Given the premise of the special, I wouldn’t expect it to link heavily with the new show and this will most likely be a fun little standalone to bring the audience up to speed.

With season 10 all ready and set for a release in April next year, there has now been focus put upon season 11 of the hit sci-fi show.

Season 11 will see the baton of showrunner move from Steven Moffat to Chris Chibnall. There has been some speculation that with Moffat’s departure Capaldi would follow suit.

However, in a recent interview with Wales Online, Capaldi had this to say; “I’ve been asked to stay on and I haven’t made my mind up about that yet… mainly because I don’t want to have to make that decision. I’m trying to avoid it!” He continued saying, “It’s special. I’m lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody.”

This means that the possibility of Capaldi staying on is very much there, albeit a little uncertain.

Popularity for Doctor Who has waned slightly over the last few seasons. It is hoped that with the new showrunner, it can be reinvigorated yet again.

The Dr Who Christmas special, will air on Christmas Day on BBC one at 5:45pm
