Nika Futterman talks Asajj Ventress’ return and wants to see the story continue

Ok, so I haven’t had a chance to watch Tales of the Underworld this Star Wars Day but I will be watching it very soon and one thing I can’t wait for is more Asajj Ventress.

During her time in the Star Wars universe, Ventress, a Dathomir Witch, was an apprentice of Count Dooku who he tried to kill who then worked with Boba Fett and then joined the light side, tried to kill Dooku, fell in love with Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos and then died before coming back – told you, Dathomir Witch – and now she seems to be fully on the side of the Angels, having met the Bad Batch and helping to keep Omega safe.

And now she’s leading her own trilogy of adventures in Tale of the Underworld and I’d be lying if I didn’t see a future for Ventress in the Star Wars universe and it seems like I’m not alone.

Actress Nika Futterman has also been thinking that Ventress could still have stories to tell in a universe as large as the Star Wars one.

“After The Bad Batch, they told me they had this little idea for an ‘entree’,” Futterman says.

The actress goes on to say that we’ve spent so much time with Vetress as a villain, as complex as she was, that now it’s time to know her as not quite a hero but maybe and anti-hero? “We’ve spent all these years knowing her as a bad guy who was definitely multi-layered but didn’t show a softer side. I don’t want to say she has become soft, but we explore a side of her besides the lone wolf road warrior that we’re familiar with.”

In the book Dark Desciple, an official novel in Star Wars lore, we see Ventress’ rise to the light and her love for Vos which leads her there and Futterman knows that that set her down a path she cannot leave: “No matter how hard she tries now, she can no longer just be dark. Anyone who has experienced love can no longer just be dark. Everything was already there lurking below the surface.”

But now that we’ve seen her character change and evolve, might we see even more? Were the three episodes of Tales of the Underworld just the starter leading to the main course or entree? “Let’s do it, baby,” Futterman says, “It seems that everybody loves her and wants more.”

Let’s indeed! Ventress is one of Star Wars’ long line of real tough women and we’d love to see more of her story unfold in the coming years in animation and/or live-action.

What about you all? Would you like to see this too? Let me know your thoughts…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
