Well, it’s going to be a cold, lonely Christmas for Doctor Who fans this year as it looks like the newest incarnation of the character will not be appearing on screens on Christmas Day as has become tradition since 2005.
Nope but there’s a good reason, apparently… creative drought. No, seriously.
While Chris Chibnall said earlier this year that an eleventh episode with Jodie Whittaker and the new TARDIS crew was being filmed, despite it being for a season made of of ten episodes, it’s not be a yuletide treat: “I would definitely think there’s another episode after the end of the series,” he said.
But not Christmas.
Previous showrunner Steven Moffat said: “I sort of think we might have mined, and possibly over mined, every single thing we could about Christmas in Doctor Who and the last time we more or less ignored it.”
And now a ‘source’ as has said: “BBC bosses have already made the bold move of shifting the entire series from Saturday to Sunday nights so they won’t be scared about moving the festive special from Christmas to New Year.”
So, if true, we’ll not be opening presents with The Doctor, but rather seeing in the new year with her much like we did waaaaaaaaay back in 1996 with Paul McGann’s ill-fated movie which took place on New Year’s Eve.
On top of that, it looks like after this, the series will not be back until 2020 as filming has been pushed back until late 2019.
Honestly, we wonder if the BBC knows what to do with this show anymore.
