After much hoo – hah, speculation and the sort, it has been officially confirmed that Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson will direct the two part Season 9 finale of Doctor Who in 2015.
Steven Moffat told SFX in the magazine’s new issue: “He can do what the hell he likes – he owns New Zealand! I think he’s sincere in his Doctor Who fandom, to say the least. He’s a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. He’s into it – it’s just ‘Can you make it work?’ I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand! And I’m like ‘Okaaay… I’d rather we just flew you to Cardiff!’”
The prospect of Jackson directing an episode has been doing the rounds for a while now, with previous Doctor Matt Smith expressing his enthusiasm for the New Zealand born director to work on the show. Of course that will now happen but with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.
Its also very interesting that Jackson will be directing the series 9 finale, which Steven Moffat recently teased he had come up with a real whopper of a cliffhanger for that series which fans wont see coming.
Perhaps this is when the Doctor finally finds the lost planet Galifrey? If so it would be a grand and ambitious episode indeed, and who better to bring it to life than Peter Jackson?
