Before we go ANY further there is something that you have to understand: this post contains spoilers for the end of season 5 of Game of Thrones and speculation for season 6; if you go any further you HAVE been warned!

spoilers

The final episode of Game of Thrones season climaxed with the brutal multiple stabbing of the 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch at the hands of his own men. Since then fans of the show have been coming up with theories of Jon Snow’s fate moving forwards – because let’s face it he can’t be dead (we hope!) – including his possible resurrection at the hands of the Melisandre, The Red Woman, Priestess of the Lord of Light, and all round bad-ass woman!

This speculation has been prompted by the fact that shortly before the killing, Melisandre returned to The Wall.

As we’ve seen before with Thoros of Myr, who was able to call upon the Lord of Light to revive Beric Dondarrion after he was killed by Sandor Clegane, followers of R’hllor (AKA the Lord of Light, AKA the Red God, AKA the Heart of Fire, and AKA the God of Flame and Shadow) are able to cheat death and bring back the dead, so perhaps  Melisandre could bring Jon Snow back from the dead too with her magical powers.

During her appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Melisandre actress Carice Van Houten told the assembled audience, when speaking about Jon Snow: “No, he can’t be dead. No!”

Asked about the resurrection theory, she added: “I’ve seen that on the internet; like I’ve seen stuff saying ‘we’ll forgive you if you save him’.”

If it isn’t bad enough that Melisandre is getting social media entreaties to save Jon Snow it seems that the actress herself is getting some rather nasty hate mail too. Revealing that some fans get the lines between the show and reality blurred, she said: “I had so many people on Twitter telling me ‘f*** off, b****.

“I’ve never had so many death wishes in my life. It was so interesting to experience that. I mean, I knew it was coming – I thought, I’m not gonna get any more sympathy after this!”

We’re all going to have to wait until the sixth season premieres, in April 2016, to find out once and for all the fate of Jon Snow and if Melisandre has a hand to play in it.
