Sleepy Hollow was, without question, not only the show that took us most by surprise last year but it was also one of the best things on TV. It’s big, mad and wonderful and it looks like that’s the plan for the foreseeable future.
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with some of the stars and executive producers about the direction the show will head next season: “There really is no shark to jump, because in the pilot, we kicked the shark in the teeth,” Ichabod Crane actor Tom Mison said.
But, on the central relationship of Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod – think Mulder and Scully only, you know, madder – executive producer/showrunner Mark Goffman said: “Their relationship is at the core of everything we do.”
Len Wiseman expanded on this: “Abbie and Crane need each other very desperately and it’s one of those things that got us excited about the pilot. This idea that, as a man out of time, he needs her for guidance, and she has been so alone her whole life … They have a unique connection from the start … The level of intimacy has to be played for what it honestly is, which is how much they need each other,” he said.
Mison added: “And running around woods in the middle of the night chasing after monsters is profoundly erotic, and so sometimes I have to throw her a saucy look. Hashtag Ichabbie.”
However, Wiseman was quick to knock the idea of romantic entanglement on the head: “[Abbie and Ichabod] have a respect for each other. We’re really not playing their relationship on the romantic side.”
As for the second season story, Goffman says there are big secrets coming “that neither of them are possibly prepared for”.
The second season will play for 18 epsodes (Yes!) and will feature a host of new villains and characters – oh and John Noble is a series regular – including succubus, Piped Piper and a windigo on the evil side; Benjamin Franklin, played by Timothy Busfield, and the Sheriff Leena Reyes, played by House of Cards’ Sakina Jaffrey will both be on the side of the angels.
Oh and, get this, Ichabod will get a new wardrobe and will embrace modern conventions even more this year… he’ll be learning to drive!
Sleepy Hollow returns on september 22nd.
