Only days after we reported that a sequel to Hocus Pocus was in the works with the original cast (here) – which we admit got us a little excited – it has now ben confirmed that all is not exactly as it seems.
Basically, yes, The Disney Channel is working on a Hocus Pocus TV movie but it will be a – sigh – reimagining of the original movie.
So no Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker or Kathy Najimy (above).
The new take is being written by Scarlett Lacey (The Royals), with David Kirschner, producer on the original movie, on board to executive produce.
The new Hocus Pocus iteration will have a new cast and a new director. [Kenny] Ortega, who has directed Disney Channel’s two biggest TV movie franchises, High School Musicaland Descendants [and the original 1993 movie], is not involved.
So there you go, no sooner are we excited for the sequel to the cult classic about witches chasing children on Halloween night, to looking forward to a Disney Channel reboot.
Our expectations are not too high, we’ll not lie…
