Star Wars: Resistance has the saga’s first openly gay couple

It seems that Star Wars has already given us its first gay couple and we didn’t know it.

It’s possible that the reason we didn’t know is because they are characters in Star Wars: Resistance and there’s three people watching it (meow).

So who are they? Well, on the latest Coffee With Kenobi podcast (below) Star Wars: Resistance executive producers Justin Ridge and Brandon Auman confirmed that Orka and Flix, the owners the Office of Acquisitions on the Colossus are a gay couple: “I think it’s safe to say they’re an item,” Ridge says.

“They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that,” added Auman.

The characters are played by Bobby Moynihan and Jim Rash who have now confirmed that, yes, they’ve been playing them as gay since day one: “Oh, I’m so happy we’re allowed to say it,” Moynihan said.

“I have had a sentence prepared for a year and a half if someone would finally ask me. I would say, ‘All I can say is when Flix says ‘I love you,’ Orca says ‘I know.’”

I know that as a straight, married man I find it hard to see the importance of this – and I can only assume it is important to represent, I just don’t really see why anyone – gay, straight or otherwise – would really care that much, especially since they are aliens who don’t exactly look humanoid.

But, whatever the case may be, it’s nice that it’s in there and if it makes even one person feel batter about themselves, then fair play.

Star Wars: Resistance returns for its second and final season on October 6, 2019.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
