We finally have an official synopsis for Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series.
Inspired by JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the new series will be a prequel to the books and subsequent movies and will explore the Second Age of Middle Earth and will feature both new and familiar characters from Tolkien’s lore.
“This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breath-taking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”
Will we see the more ageless characters such as Galadriel and Elrond pop up in the show? Only time will tell.
Will it tie into the movies? Casting aside, we see no reason why it won’t act as a prequel for those of us who haven’t read the books (I’ve tried… several times) and prefer Peter Jackson’s movies for their Middle Earth hit.
No word on when the series will debut but we’ll keep you posted as and when we get more details.
