After the surprising news last season that Ruby Rose was stepping down as the titular Batwoman after just one season in The CW’s DC series (here), it looks like the choice for her replacement has been made.
Yes, it looks like Kate Kane is no longer Batwoman in the Arrowverse and has now been replaced by Ryan Wilder, to be played by God Friended Me actress Javicia Leslie.
According to The CW: “Ryan Wilder is a female in her mid-late 20s and the complete opposite of Kate Kane.
“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed.
“With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, reformed and sober, Ryan lives in van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk from an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Leslie will make her debut in Season 2 of Batwoman which is due in January 2021 and had this to say: “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”
When Rose stepped down showrunner Caroline Dries justified the new character direction rather than simply recasting: “To be honest with you, I did consider the ‘soap opera version’ [of recasting] for a hot minute, because selfishly we already had a couple episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless. But upon further reflection — and I think [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.’”
It seems that Kane’s disappearance will be written into the overall direction of Season 2 but whether this means Rose may return at some point is unknown… but, hey, it’s The CW so I’d not rule it out.
Let us know what you all think of the move, guys. Fans or not? I wanna hear it all.
