In the most unexpected news of the weekend, it looks like Disney+ is getting in the festive mood a little early as they have given the go-ahead to a TV series based on The Santa Claus movies with Tim Allen set to return in the title role, reprising his movie gig as Scott Calvin AKA Santa.
The movies saw Calvin accidentally killing Santa – no, really – and having to become the new Mr Claus and, despite the fact that the movies got worse as they went on, the series has become a Christmas staple in many homes… yes, including ours.
However, the new limited series may see the formula being shook up and opening the doors for the next Santa:
Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realising that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties and, more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the North Pole. With a lot of elves, children and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.
Interestingly, the series will be showrun by Jack Burditt who created Allen’s hit comedy series Last Man Standing and is set to begin filming in March, meaning it’s likely set for Christmas 2022.
I’m a fan of the early series of Last Man Standing and The Santa Claus regularly gets a Christmas screening in our house, so I’ll be watching with interest. Let’s just hope they do a [much, much] better job with this than the Home Alone reboot. Shudder.
This will now be the fourth time Allen has taken up the role of Calvin/Santa. He first starred in the film “The Santa Clause” in 1994, which was followed by two sequels in 2002 and 2006.
