Ok…I’m confused.
On what could’ve been a monumental Agents Of Shield, “Devil’s Complex” did give one heck of a twist (or two), but while one was definitely epic, the main one, the one that the episode hinged on, really came out of nowhere, and it made the episode suffer.
With the “Fear Dimension” still open, Fitz had to work on a way to get the Gravitonium to work in his device in order to close it, but he couldn’t figure it out. So, when the Framework version of Fitz came out to “play”, we all thought it was going to be a way for Fitz to confront who he was in the Framework and then realize what he needed to do. But…that’s not what happened.
For apparently, unlike much of the returning half of the season, this WASN’T a vision from the Fear Dimension. Instead, it was actually Fitz the whole time! For you see, Fitz has been hearing “Leopold” in his mind since they left the Framework, but only “recently” has he been seeing him, and it was Fitz, not Leopold, or was it…anyway, who experimented on Daisy to give her back her powers so that the Gravitonium could FINALLY shut the breach in dimensions.
Was that hard to follow? Because I had a hard time following that. While the idea of Fitz having a “Psyche Break” wasn’ the worst plot device ever, it certainly came out of nowhere. This is a man two episodes removed from his wedding, and one episode removed from finding the very thing he needs to stop the Fear Dimension from crossing over. and NOW his psyche breaks? Really?
What’s more, I refuse to believe that even with everything on the line that he would do that to Daisy. Leopold “leaving” him or not, I don’t think he would do it. And then in the “confession” with Gemma, she agreed that they needed to do it! WHAT?!?!?
The only saving grace from this was the Deek finally revealed that he was the grandson of FitzSimmons, to which Simmons promptly gagged, and it was awesome.
Moving onto the other storylines. Yo-Yo is getting closer to getting her robot arms, but Mack is still doting over her like a helpless child. It was adorable at first, but I was hoping for more progress on this storyline.
Finally, Coulson tried to set a trap for Hale, but it backfired, so he decided to give himself up in order to finally find out what was going on. I’m glad that Coulson admitted his mistake in rushing too quickly into the ambush, but I feel after all that happened, he would’ve foreseen a possible trap. Still, Hale is a good foil for Coulson, and seeing Kreel and Superior back was a nice twist.
But not THE twist, for apparently, Hale IS WORKING FOR HYDRA! What’s more, she’s got Kree juice to turn her into a berserker! And if next week’s episode is any clue, we’re in store for a few more twists before this season is over.
In the end “Devil’s Complex” had some interesting ideas, but many of them fell flat. Hopefully, with this “Fear Dimension” gone we can get to more interesting storylines.
