TV REVIEWS: FTN REVIEWS Agents Of Shield Season 6 Episode 9: Collision Course Part 2

July 13th, 2019 by Todd Black Comments

Would it be mean for me to do a shocked phrase about we’ve now had two good episodes back to back in this season? No, I honestly don’t think it is. After an inconsistent and sometimes downright horrible season at point, “Collision Course” may just be the thing that saves it, if for no other reason that the team is all back together, and we’re starting to get answers…at points.

After the great cliffhanger last week, “Collision Course Part 2” did a great job of not just raising the tension, but showing just how deadly everything was even when certain parts of various plans didn’t go as planned. The Shrike tower turning back into bats? Smart. Not-Coulson getting the plane and then losing because of Yo-Yo? Cool. Izel’s ship getting boarded, and then repelling the attack, only for Jacko to blow it to high heaven? Epic.

This episode felt like it mattered. But also, it delved into various aspects that mattered. We got to see Izel and Sarge interact, and it again laced the seeds of what Not-Coulson is and isn’t. I just hope that after all this building for them both, the answers we get are worth hearing, because it’s on a razor edge right now to be honest.

But for me, what really made the episode was the character interactions. FitzSimmons FINALLY got to where they used to be, and the line, “you smell nice” was both simple and perfect in the circumstances.

Daisy and Mack also had some great stuff going on. Including their interaction together at the end of the party where they finally got to decompress a little and were just happy to see one another. Mack’s hugging of Fitz after not seeing him for over a year was really genuine. Even May got to crack a smile and it felt naturally because she hadn’t seen them in a while either.

Then, of course, there was the reconciliation between Mack and Yo-Yo. It’s hard to tell how long it’s been since Keller’s death, so I do feel their making up literally was a little rushed, but Mack’s “I screwed up” speech felt right on the money.

And as much as I don’t like Not-Coulson, hearing him lose it multiple times because he was so close to his “purpose”, only for him to have it taken away from him was nice. Even the “it wasn’t personal, Snow” line felt good to the character.

Oh, speaking of Snowflake, I really can’t stand her and Deke together. I mean, as Daisy noted, why wasn’t she behind bars? She killed a LOT of innocent people. And she did it because she wanted to turn them into butterflies! Even may said it, “she’s a serial killer”! But because Deke met her all of last episode and they’re a “couple”, she gets to stay?

Also, while the sacrifice of Jacko was well down, we all know that Izel is alive (which the previews for next episode prove).  And while Sarge MAY be dead, we all know that there was more to it in that end scene.

Still, those faults aside, “Collision Course Part 2” was a very strong episode that finally got back to what made Agents of Shield great. And with the setup that it did, it might just turn itself around…but I have to wait and see on that.
