TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Black Lightning Season 01 Episoe 10: Sins of the Father: The Book of Redemption

March 28th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

After a perfect episode last week, I was very curious to see how Black Lightning followed things up. And while “Sins Of The Father: The Book Of Redemption” wasn’t as perfect as last weeks episode, it did bring up some interesting things.

First up, the ASA is kidnapping kids who show off signs of powers, and the kids from 30 years ago are still alive. Why are they keeping them in stasis? What are they trying to learn? It’s interesting to think above. Furthermore, the head ASA jerk was so convinced that Gambi knew about the identity of Black Lightning that he had him kidnapped (more or less) and then tortured, which then led to them taking Jefferson. This turned out both good and bad, because while Gambi is alive, they now know that Jefferson is Black Lightning. Oh, and the Vice Principal is an ASA agent!!!! WHAT THE HECK???

Meanwhile, on the homefront, the Jennifer situation continues to accelerate, while we basically had a rehash of things from last week, we did get to see some escalation in her powers, including her whole body becoming energy. She’s also apparently much more powerful than Jefferson as her body is a “generator” of energy. That’s pretty interesting.

Then…there’s Lala. I honestly have no idea where this story is going. But they seem very invested in it. First he sees ghosts, now he can’t die apparently, and he wants to fill the streets with cocaine and other drugs since Greenlight is MIA more or less. Where is this leading? I really hope we find out soon.

One thing I really do appreciate is that the episode brought back characters that could’ve easily been write-offs before. Like the kid that sent a message in the pilot on behalf of Lala. Or 2Bits. Yet they’ve come back into the fold in a very fun way. I hope this aspect of things continues.

The problem though is that this made the episode incredibly busy, and not every scene worked because of it. For example, why was the head of the ASA not there when Jefferson was brought in? There’s no way he wouldn’t have wanted to see Gambi break, and yet, he let his lackeys be alone with them? That doesn’t seem right. And again, what’s going on with Lala?

Even so, “Sins of the Father: Book Of Redemption’ did a good job dealing with past, present, and future issues, and the previews for next week seem to be pushing things into an even more interesting direction. We’ll see how it all plays out.
