TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 15: The Omega

March 19th, 2019 by Todd Black Comments

The difficult thing about season finales is that you have to try and do everything you can to wrap up past storylines and teasing what comes next. And while Black Lightning’s Season 2 finale “The Omega” did much of this in good supply, it also rushed, or ignored, certain other aspects.

On one hand, you had the battle for Freeland with the power going out (a smart move by Tobias), and chaos reigning everywhere. Plus, the metahumans under his control were sent to get back the pod kids that he lost. This created a very fun battle for Black Lightning and Thunder. Meanwhile, the newly born Lightning had to re-control her powers (though apparently going to her mindspace didn’t work for some reason…), and then be talked out of killing Tobias Whale.

Which was actually one of the biggest problems of the episode. He went down really easily, and once he was dealt with he was just given away to a black site? That makes no sense, especially since Lynn clearly didn’t trust the ASA anymore. So how did Tobias end up in their custody? And clearly he’ll come back, but this was a rather weak way to go.

Which brings me to Lala. Who once again started out interesting with his newest resurrection, and even saved Black Lightning. But once he met Tobias, it all went pear-shaped again. Because with a few words he was taken down, and now he’s…honestly, I don’t know where he is. Tobias said he wasn’t dead, so where is he now? And now that Tobias is locked away, and the fact that he’s now fully the Tattoo Man, what’s his storyline going to be?

Looking back on the positive side, they set up one heck of a season 3. Odell has revealed to the Pierce’s that he knows who they are. And that the Markovians (who has Dr. Jace) will be coming to Freeland for the other pod kids…who are now set free. So even with Tobias locked away, there are a lot of hidden and known threats that are going to be popping up soon.

And that ending scene with Jefferson crying and being grateful about what he had, that was some good stuff. Something that the other shows honestly can’t do in their current state. It’s really what sets Black Lightning apart from the others.

So despite some of its faults and missteps, “The Omega” was a good way to end Season 2. Season 3 is a guarantee via the new renewals, so I look forward to seeing what happens now that this family of superheroes is all suited up and ready to go.
