TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 6: Knocking On Heaven’s Gate

November 19th, 2019 by Todd Black Comments

Black Lightning is one that has always focused on family drama, but that doesn’t mean all the drama is good, and even with some compelling storylines interweaved it doesn’t make “Knocking On Heaven’s Gate” better than it could’ve been.

On one hand, having the Pierce family still mourning the loss of Tavon is good stuff, especially in regards to Anissa and Jefferson. Having them fight about what happened was good too. However, them basically putting a wall between them? And then having Lynn leave at the end of the episode to basically make Jefferson alone? That felt a little rushed in my mind.

Furthermore, having Jefferson do a lot of Black Lightning stuff off-camera, including a “Zorro” feat that we deserved to see, didn’t help either. In fact, a lot of the action was fully done off-camera including a potentially epic fight scene. Plus, I don’t buy that the ASA would lose like they did to the Markovians, especially since they’re supposed to be the only people able to “stop them”.

Jennifer finding out about the new kid being a meta, and one tied to Dr. Jace is cool, and his explanation of his powers is more or less fine. Though it doesn’t explain how he can absorb her energy. We’ll have to see where this is all going, but we can predict a few things if you get my drift.

My other big problem with the episode was the teasing of Anissa dying at the beginning of the episode where it was clear that she wouldn’t die. If for no other reason than she’s a very big piece of the storyline as it stands right now. If they had dredged this over a few episodes it would’ve been better.

In the end, the episode was fine in its own rights, but too many weird cut-offs, scenes that took place off-screen and random departures for certain characters made it so that there was more curious things than good storytelling.
