TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Gotham Season 04 Episode 10: Things That Go Boom

December 1st, 2017 by Todd Black Comments

Well, that escalated quickly. After weeks of seeing these characters try and outsmart one another it was great to see it all come to a head with “Things That Go Boom”, and it did so in very fun and surprising ways.

First and foremost, seeing the conflict between Sophia and Penguin finally come to a head was great. I was getting tired of the dance they were doing, and now they finally got to go all out. Props to the actress who plays Sofia, because she can switch things on a dime and you believe both sides of her. I loved how calm she was in the face of danger, and how much vision and foresight she had to ensure that not only did nothing happen to her, but also, how to make Penguin do what she wanted.

Of course, you can’t predict everything, as the Sirens and Penguin both got legs up on her at times, which was honestly a really good thing, because if she was too smart, it wouldn’t have worked. I was also happy that Gordon also grew tired of her games and even made a deal with Penguin to get her out of the city. You have to wonder what would have happened if their plan had worked.

So now, after many twists and turns, war is now upon Gotham once again. It’s easy to guess that Penguin will win, but maybe not as cleanly as he’s done in the past, it’s hard to say how it’ll go.

Especially now that Pyg is out in the wild again. I wasn’t sure where they were taking the whole, “Who is he?” storyline, but now it’s clear that Pyg isn’t done with Gordon and Gotham yet, so, what role will he play in the upcoming events? I’m very interested.

I’m also interested in seeing how Leslie and Nygma play into this. It was good to see Leslie try and be an honorable crime lord (yes, that is an oxymoron but roll with it), it shows that she hasn’t lost who she is, but she’s also willing to take steps to protect those she’s sworn to help. It’s a nice twist on the character, and while not everything worked (her calling Ed her “friend” felt a little hollow), it was good for the most part. Also, with the reveal that Nygma actually is fine and its just mental issues stopping him, where does he go from here?

All in all, “Things That Go Boom” delivered solid storylines from multiple characters, and with the Fall Finale next week, I’m expecting a big sendoff.
