TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Gotham Season 04 Episode 16: One Of My Three Soups

March 30th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Well, with Sophia gone (technically…) it seems that the endgame for Gotham Season 04 is in play. And oh boy, is it a big one, and a violent one. From the outset, “One of my Three Soups” made it perfectly clear that this might just be the darkest set of days for Gotham, and for reasons both expected and not. Jerome, Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow are all teaming up, and it appears they’re just getting started.

There were a lot of things to appreciate in this episode. Gordon is still unsure why he stays around, which led to some great chats with Harvey. Mad Hatter was a delight as he almost always is, the plot was brilliant (the evil plot I should say), and there were some interesting side stories. Before I get into those though, I loved the solution to the hypnosis problem, as well as how far James was willing to go to get Hatter to cooperate. And the twist that the entire plan was a DISTRACTION??? Brilliant.

Elsewhere, Bruce and Selina had a great little sidestory as Bruce tried to find Jerome himself, as he felt responsible for Jerome still being alive after their encounter last season. Selina beautifully denied this because of “his ego being so huge”. These two have developed a wonderful chemistry, and should this be the final season, I have they have a meaningful Bat/Cat kiss before it ends.

There are a lot of questions though about what all this means. What is Jerome looking for? Why did his uncle have what he needed? What is the rest of the plan? It’s all very exciting.

Then, there’s Barbara, who finally got the answer she was looking for in terms of her migraines and her hand. Turns out, there’s a very literal beacon as to who is the new Ra’s Al Ghul, and the former Ra’s gave it to Barbara…that’s scary in numerous ways. What’s more, she now has more Sirens at her beck and call…which is also scary. I don’t know where this will lead, but with the League of Shadows and Jerome’s “creme de la crazy” in town, this is not going to end well.

In the end, “One of my Three Soups” had a lot going for it, and it’s got a lot of momentum ending into the back end of the season.
