TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 6: Bishop’s Gambit

June 14th, 2021 by Todd Black Comments

In my opinion, the last couple of episodes of Legends of Tomorrow have been more hit than miss. But with “Bishop’s Gambit” things at least got back on a certain track as well as setup one heck of a twist that could play out in many ways.

First and foremost, let’s talk about that twist. Sara Lance, the REAL Sara Lance, is dead, and the person we’ve seen for the last episode or so has been a clone of hers. There will be a lot who don’t take this well, but it’s honestly all a matter of perspective. Our Ava is a clone, yet her own person, and the other Ava clones have shown that as well. And as Bishop proves, his clones are literally his equal. Kind of like Mr. Sinister (which is why he’s so hard to kill in the comics…and LOTS of people have tried). So technically speaking…it honestly is still Sara, right down to her moral code and butt-kicking moves.

That being said, the REAL Sara Lance could still come back if the next set of episodes happen like a certain team want it to.

Yes, I’m referring to the Legends, who found themselves meeting a familiar fact via Amelia Earhart, and we learned what happened to her. She was an experiment by Bishop who turned her (or at the very least inhabited her) with the aliens from the planet they’re on. Very gruesome.

What’s more, Spooner seems to be able to communicate with them in way that signals that SHE might have been an experiment of Bishop’s when she was younger (he has been at this a long time…). I still think there’s a twist or two to go with her storyline (still hoping she’s tied to Jonah Hex in some way) but we’ll see.

Ava’s descent into hopelessness was well handled here from finding the Waverider, to causing the “hulk out” in the alien, to breaking down when Sara was revealed to be “dead” (which technically was true, the alien killed her), it was all well done.

Even Mick had a good storyline on the planet…and he had a “good time” on the planet that was equal parts funny, predictable…and predictably gross. You couldn’t pay me enough to fully understand what happened in that pod…nope, not enough money in the galaxy.

But…there were some issues with the episode overall. Including Constantine and Astra. We literally just went through the “this house is falling apart” thing with Astra and yet they opened the episode with it just with John and with a small twist in regards to the Legends ruining everything. Second, there should’ve been more about the “John losing his magic” bit given how important a twist it was last week.

Still, even without that, “Bishop’s Gambit” was more of a shift in the right direction, and with a very Doctor Who/Back To The Future style set of episodes starting next week…it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
