And…we’re down again. After a great use of the Rogues last week, I was very intrigued with the idea of a giant monster running through Central City. Especially since in the comics we just got done with an arc called “Night of the Monster Men” where the Batman family did just that. Sadly, their battle was a lot more entertaining.

I’ll get the bad out of the way. The monster reveal was very weak. Depending on how much you think ahead, it was kind of telegraphed, or at least teased that it was real. Which is sad, because it could’ve been something very special that not even Arrow could do. Instead? We got a kid trying to make other people scared because he’s bullied at school. Why didn’t he used his very evident skills to scare the bullies? Just a thought.

Then there’s Julian. Who I’ll admit is redeemed in my eyes after that ending scene, but the buildup was way too long. I know we’re supposed to hate the guy for how he treats Barry, but it was was put on so strong that you basically rolled yours eyes with every conversation they had. Then when he gave his various explanations, I couldn’t help but think, “That’s it?” Again, he redeemed himself at the end, and hopefully this “rivalry” with Barry will be on the backburner now so that they can do other things.

Getting into the more positive, HR is a fraud! I’ll admit, that was clever, and it adds a fun new dynamic to the team. It ALSO proves that Harry (E2) was right about his instincts! Never doubt Harry!!!! I wasn’t expecting it to go like this, and the writers did a good job of showing that HR is more than he seems without making us think he was…well…that. Where do we go from here? Not sure. But it’s going to be interesting, that’s for sure.

Which of course brings us to the best part of the episode. Caitlin! Who went to her mother for help with her powers. This was a meetup years in the making, and it got to show a side of Caitlin we hadn’t seen yet. Yes, there was cliches galore, but it worked for the most part. What didn’t work? That assistant thinking he could trap Caitlin…WHILE HE WAS IN THE ROOM WITH HER!!! Seriously, you didn’t think she would freeze you solid? And for what? So you could get scans and data that MAY lead you to not work for her mother? Quit your job man!

It was fun seeing her going Killer Frost, and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Overall, “Monster” was average, which is sad, because it had potential, it just didn’t live up to it.
