After a less than perfect start with “Flash Reborn”, you had to wonder how things would try and pick up in this episode, “Mixed Signals.” Thankfully, some things did work out well. Sadly, others didn’t, and a recurring pattern returned to rear its ugly head.
Let’s start with the good. One of the biggest things the team behind The Flash noted before the season was that Iris was NOT ok with what Barry did at the end of Finish Line. And here, after Barry basically ignored her advice, as well as the help she offered, she decided to take a stand and make him listen. Cue…couples therapy!
Now, on one hand, you knew this would be ridiculous, and yet, they made it work here, especially when she blew up at him for acting nonchalant about things. I loved how she had to reveal to everyone who mattered about how the wedding was still on…but yet it wasn’t. You could sense the hurt that she had as she had to lie to so many people.
And yeah, Barry did deserve what happened to him. As he was acting a little too on cloud 9. But thankfully, he was brought back down to Earth.
On the couples thread, Cisco and Gypsy had a fun little story about how they had a date…but a meta caused it not to happen…and then we got to learn more about Earth-19 and its couples traditions…it was cute. And it was nice to see Gypsy be more…girlish in a way, while still being her epic bounty hunter self. And it was nice for Cisco to make it up to her, I don’t want them to break up!!!!
Sadly…the rest of the episode was pretty standard, to a dull extent. A meta wanted revenge…but he was justified in a way…hijinx happened…and then he was caught…but then he was revealed to NOT have been a part of the Particle Accelerator explosion…and now there are 11 other meta out there…while some of these things were ok, the rest weren’t. And for those who have read the Cyborg comics of recent years, you know that is a pour interpretation of Kilg%re.
Though short, The Thinkers return to the show was well done, and it’s cool to see he has a master plan and it’s going just as he…thought…it would. Also, could you imagine what this guy could do if he wasn’t trying to kill the Flash? Just saying.
While “Mixed Signals” ironically did very well on the couples front, the meta storyline was pretty basic. Hopefully things will evolve pretty quickly.
