TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Flash Season 04 Episode 23: We Are The Flash

May 23rd, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

The Flash has always had an issue with season finales. Even going back to its first (and best) season it just couldn’t stick the landing, and that’s progressed with both the Zoom and Savitar arcs. Happily, I can say that “We Are The Flash” delivered not just a satisfying ending of the season, but a worthy teaser for what’s to come.

First off, I was happy that we got some answers to some very obvious questions, mainly…how were they going to stop The Thinker? Well, by beating him in his mind of course. It was a brilliant twist, and one that incorporated Cecil’s telepathic abilities. So it really did feel like a culmination of things that led to this insight. I also appreciated not only Marlize helping everywhere she could, but also noting that even if Barry called in Ollie and Kara and Wally it wouldn’t be enough to stop DuVoe.

Still once things got rolling, you had to wonder if it would be as simple Marlize made it out to be. Turns out, it wasn’t. For the “good parts” of DuVoe were truly dead, but not all in his mind was evil, for Ralph Dibny lived. Yes, I predicted earlier that he would return before this was all over, but I honestly didn’t expect this twist of Ralph’s personality overthrowing DuVoe’s control so that he could get his body back.

Props to DuVoe though, he fought like heck to have his plan succeed, and he went out like a boss, even using Kilg%re’s powers to program a backup plan in case he failed. His use might not always have been done right, but I would put DuVoe as the #2 “big bad” behind Reverse Flash. He was a very worthy adversary.

Adding to the drama was that Cecil was about have her baby, talk about timing! And yes, as I did NOT predict, the baby lived, and was healthy. Jenna West is born…and no, there is no Jenna West in DC Comics that I could find…but…

Nora Allen! The second one, she’s real, and she did a bad thing! I LOVED that scene where Barry was about to destroy the satellite and then the scene paused and started over again, but this time with Nora at his side. That was a cool moment, and you can bet that because she saved her father, bad things are going to happen. Also, confirmed, Barry and Iris have a kid!

Finally, we got a resolution to the Harry arc. He has some of his intelligence back, but not all of it. I find this kind of an odd way to resolve things, but I guess Harry is better off, it’s a little weird.

My only real complaints with the episode outside of the Harry thing is one, Barry could’ve just rushed Ralph to the exit right from the start. Instead, he stopped, explained the situation, then fought several waves of Duvoe before realizing he could just rush to the extent, that felt weird. Also, I wish we could’ve seen more of the effects of the Enlightenment on a grander scale instead of “it’ll start when the satellites are at 100% capacity”.

Still, “We Are The Flash” stood out as a very good ending to a rather uneven season. And I hope that the arrival of Nora brings many wonderful stories next season.
