TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Flash Season 05 Premiere!

October 10th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Going to have to keep the review short tonight despite it being the premiere. However, there’s honestly not that much to talk about given the content of “Nora.”

This whole season, or at the very least the first half of the season, is all about Barry and Iris’ superpowered daughter Nora coming back to the past to try and ‘save” her dad. But now she’s stuck…or so we think.

While it remains to be seen how well Nora will fit into the Team Flash dynamic, the energy of her actress is something that can’t be denied. But unlike annoying people with “energy”, hers is channeled the right way. She’s in awe of her father, and is giddy by the prospect of being with everyone. So much so that she “fangirls”, and that’s adorable at times…but hopefully they won’t push it too far like other characters have had happen.

What I am thankful for is that the future is revealed in certain ways to where we understand why Nora had to come back. Barry’s “vanishing” in “Crisis” wasn’t just a one-off thing, he apparently “never came back”. And because of this, and apparently a not so good upbringing with now solo parent Iris, she was desperate to spend at least one day with Barry. Which now is much more than a day.

Here’s my problem with this. Granted, it’s a touching storyline, but much like the Iris “death” in Season 3, we know that this isn’t going to stick. Barry either will come out of the Crisis quickly, or they prevent it full stop. There’s no payoff to this. True, they could pull off a twist, but I’m not sure they will.

Sadly, because they focused on Nora for much of the episode, the others basically got the shaft. Caitlin found out her father is alive, Cisco is mourning his breakup with Gypsy, Wally is “lost again”, and Ralph was just kind of there.

And as for the villain Gridlock…he really didn’t add anything. At all. Either way though, “Nora” was an interesting start to Flash Season 5, and hopefully between Nora and Cicada we get some meaningful storylines.
