TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Flash Season 5 Episode 18: Godspeed

April 17th, 2019 by Todd Black Comments

So now we know. The truth about Nora and her adventures in the future that led to her being in the past has been slowly pieced together. But now, with “Godspeed” we know the whole story, including a rather shocking twist on the tale that proves that not everything is as predictable as you would expect.

I honestly believe that this was one of the best episodes of the season. The fun callbacks to Season 1 (which seem to be a theme this week in popular returning shows…) as Nora is more like Barry than we realized, and how it all tied in to her getting her powers revealed and ending up with Thawne was rather interesting.

Nora’s actress did an amazing job this week. Her acting is sometimes inconsistent, but here it was on point as she played many sides of Nora West-Allen. From her eagerness to solve a case and prove speedsters were back (a haunting detail that shows that all speedsters are caught in the Crisis), to her lose over Leia, and more. It was good.

Tom Cavanaugh was also amazing, as usual. As he portrayed Thawne as a guy who was done with life and yet couldn’t help but help Nora when she really needed it. You almost have to wonder if he is working out some final plan in his final minutes, but if he is not, that’s ok.

A fun, though obviously spoiled, addition to this episode was Godspeed. If you don’t know that name, it’s ok, it’s a very, VERY, recent addition that came to The Flash series in the DC Rebirth line. And though obviously different from his comic counterparts, it was a fun twist to see how it connected to the past.

Having Iris free Nora to finish the story was a nice touch, as it showed Iris wanting to Nora the chance that she once gave to her. But then it was shut closed by Barry who continues down his own dark path as he refused to trust her because of her association with Thawne. That outburst at the end about Thawne trying to take his daughter was Grant Gusting at his finest.

That being said, it did feel a little too sudden, and though they’re going to address it next episode, I think it was a little too fast for Barry to just say “I don’t trust you” and then whisk her off to the future. Also, while I loved all the callbacks to Season 1, they did harp a little too much on that. Such as the “phase through walls” speech. Sure, they changed it up, but did we really have to hear it all again?

Regardless, “Godspeed” was a highlight of the season, and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens next.
