TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Flash Season 7 Episode 8: The People V Killer Frost

May 5th, 2021 by Todd Black Comments

Today might be the best day to be a fan of The Flash, because reports emerged today that Carlos Valdez and Tom Cavanaugh (Cisco and Harrison Wells) will not be with the series after Season 7. And now, two other members of Team Flash have found their positions changed in “The People V Killer Frost” and it’s a very…curious thing.

Let’s start out with the positive. Much of the storyline with Frost and her trial was compelling. Including being an interesting parallel to certain real-world events about what is done to certain minorities in the name of “justice”. In this case, Frost was willing to go to jail for her crimes and even plead guilty to them in order to skip a trial. But when Agent Kramer decided to play fast and loose with the law and institute a new mandate for “Killer Frost” to take the cure against her will…that was shocking.

And while that may sound impossible within the confines of the law, as Cecil said, you’d be surprised what gets allowed when you have the “weight of the justice system behind you”, another parallel to our world where people can be arrested, detained and more just for existing and someone saying that “they’re a threat”.

What really sold this storyline was the sisters’ Snow. Frost was all for taking the punishment if it meant atoning, but Caitlin was almost hysterical at the thought of losing her sister and that meant doing whatever it took to get the job done, even when that backfired and made the situation worse for Frost. Having Caitlin be the one to figure out the loophole they needed to keep Frost from taking the cure…but also ensuring she was out of her life was one that you could tell was painful for her to do…but she needed to do it because her sister needed it.

However, Kramer once again came off as the weak link. Not just because of the cure bait and switch (even getting ARGUS involved to help pull off her plan) but her motivations behind it all were frankly paper-thin. Her having a bad experience with Metas? Sure, that’s fair. But the story she gave made no sense, and her using Frost solely for a “precedent” was ludicrous, not the least of which was because as they noted multiple times, she hadn’t done crime in years! If it was Chillblaine, or Weather Wizard or someone else who was clearly villainous without remorse, that would be one thing, but Frost was a proven hero by that point.

Not to mention, her logic of using it “just on criminals” was dangerous and she knew it…but didn’t care. Because that would mean anyone, ANYONE who had a misfire with their powers or didn’t know how to control them at first would be viable for that cure. Including Allegra and The Flash! So…yeah…how does that work again?

Then, there’s the Speed Force. I’m really glad they dealt with the question of the Strength Force’s “true form” like was in the comics, and having the Speed Force be overly aggressive was fine given her past confrontation with them. But, the end result was a bit…well…forced.

Mainly because she spent a couple of episodes trying to understand Barry and Iris and being human and “being there for them” like a motherly instrument and yet…she didn’t trust Barry to handle things non-violently? It’s very much like the Kramer storyline. Mainly in that if Fwerza transformed right when the Speed Force showed up, that would be one thing. But not only did she prove multiple times over that she wasn’t “only Fuerza”, she wanted to be better, to be clean…and yet The Speed Force killed her without care or without fear of what Barry would say or do. That’s…a bit much for one episode, and you can bet next episode will have huge fallout as a result.

In the end, “People v Killer Frost” did a lot more right than it did wrong, and I’m grateful for that, because when it was on, it was on. Hopefully it’ll focus more on those points next episode.
