TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Flash Season 7 Premiere!

March 3rd, 2021 by Todd Black Comments

The premiere of The Flash Season 7 is very different from all the others for a very basic reason. Mainly in that this was actually supposed to be the 20th episode of the previous season but it got delayed because of the global pandemic that affected all the other shows as well. So “Alls Wells That Ends Wells” is both an ending and a beginning all the same time…with mixed results.

Let’s start with the positive. The use of Wells (all of them) in this episode was honestly very clear and a logical (in comic book logic that is) to get the Artificial Speed Force to work). Tom Cavanaugh was working overtime here and while it’s possibly his last episode for The Flash, it was a worthy one for the most part. And truthfully, this was a good way to end the “line of Wells” because some of them (including Nash) were just getting more annoying with each iteration. If they kept going it would’ve just been pointless, but to have them be the fuel behind the new Speed Force? That’s honoring them and making sure that no one forgets them, including Barry. Who was naturally tortured over the fact of losing yet another person in his life just so he could be saved.

Another strong element was Iris and her Mirrorverse adventures. Her seeing the “various versions of herself” from across the timeline was not just a nice touch (and great use of wardrobe) but her figuring out the truth and how she is very connected to the universe and can apparently send out messages is a nice touch. Her reunion with Barry is imminent and I can’t wait, these two deserve to be together with continually being forced apart or fearing each other’s death!

Sadly, the premiere didn’t hit on all points. A mixed point was definitely Cecil’s storyline. While I’m all for her getting more powers, the idea of Top suddenly being an Empath is…curious at best. As was Cecil apparently holding back her powers out of fear when at one point in time she could barely control them and didn’t have that kind of power before.

Also, Allegra going from “I understand” with Wells and his situation to, “I thought you changed” was so cringe. He had another idea, and it could’ve worked without killing him, was he just not supposed to try that? And now they’re apparently setting up Allegra and Chester as a couple? So cringe.

Finally, Eva finding out that she is apparently the “mirror duplicate” is a bit too much for the character. Because as she herself noted, “everything I thought was a lie”. Which is…too much. Her being the villain was a great twist, her using a duplicate of Iris to get The Flash out of her way and get the assassins on her side was a great twist. This? It’s one chip to many. And now I’m sure how to feel about her. Should we still sympathize with her? Are we supposed to think she’s nothing but a shell now? It’s hard to tell what they were going for with that.

In the end, “Alls Wells That Ends Wells” was a solid premiere for a 7th season that is going to be very interesting to watch. It wasn’t a perfect start, but it did give a good end to a long-running (pun intended) character.
