If, like us, you thought 2021’s Hawkeye series was one of Disney+’s best TV shows so far and were looking forward to season two, well, I have some bad news.

You may recall that in 2023, star Jeremy Renner had a near-fatal incident with a snow plough that he’s really only now getting over and the star seems to think that this incident has led to season 2 of Hawkeye being very unlikely… at least starring him.

In a new interview with High Performance, below, Renner says that Disney asked him to reprise the role of Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye, a role he played several times before in the MCU movies, for a second season of the Hawkeye TV show on Disney+, however, they had a caveat: “They offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount,’” he said.

Going on, he alludes that perhaps his brush with death two years ago played a part in the lower money offer: “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.’”

However, he goes on to say that he doesn’t hold Disney responsible for the insulting offer but rather the ‘penny pinchers’: “This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it.”

Fans of the show will know that Hailee Steinfeld also appeared as Kate Bishop, the second Hawkeye, and I’m hearing rumours that she will be returning for a season two, the big question being will she be alone?

“I still love the character,” Renner goes on, “I’d still love to do it, but I had to defend myself. I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made in the first season. So it’s all disheartening that that didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But we’ll see.”

Marvel reveal line-up for Avengers: Doomsday… or is it Avengers Vs X-Men?

I’m also hearing that while season 2 is unlikely to see Renner’s return, he is expected to reprise the character on the big screen in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, so the character is certainly not over and done yet. Perhaps the performance of that movie will truly dictate his return – or not – for more streaming adventures.

UPDATED:

It now seems that Marvel may have offered Renner such a low amount because they wanted him to turn the offer down.

The InSneider‘s Jeff Sneider and Puck‘s Matt Belloni both reported this, with Belloni saying: “Nobody tell Renner the show attracted middling viewership and costs would have come down across the board for a Season 2—that is, if execs weren’t lowballing him in the first place so they could pin the cancellation on him, not them.”

Pretty underhanded if true, it would suggest Renner had a second season in his contract and they needed him to walk.

Disney+ and Marvel Studios invite you on an unexpected holiday getaway with Hawkeye, a new series set in post-blip New York City. Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.

Starring Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, “Hawkeye” also features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.
