The legend that is Jason Isaacs has been chatting in a new interview about the possibility of returning to the Star Wars universe… this time in live-action.
Isaacs played the Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels and made the character one of the most memorable and complex in Star Wars canon and now, with Katee Sackhoff recently playing the character of Bo Katan in The Mandalorian, a character she previously played in animation form in Clone Wars and then Rebels, he’s being quizzed about playing the character in real-life and, unsurprisingly, he’s up for it for sure.
“I think it was because of his lightsaber [that I’d love to play him in live-action],” the star says.
“I’d like to use that spinning red lightsaber. I have the coolest wand in the Harry Potter world and I have the cool lightsaber in the Star Wars world.”
He continues, pointing out that so long as the writing is good, he’s game for anything: “The Inquisitor was a great part when I played it and if the Inquisitor was a great part again, I’d be up for it. I’m not sure I’ve got the patience of Doug Jones who plays Saru in Discovery [Isaac worked with prosthetics legend Doug Jones on Star Trek Discovery season one], who was the creature in The Shape of Water and stuff. I don’t now how many hours I’d like to spend in prosthetics. But yeah, Katee [Sackoff] had a very good time. I know Katee and I’ll say, I’ve loved being part of the Star Wars world. They’ve invited me in although I’ve only ever been an animated character before.”

The actor concludes: “I’m being a bit cagey because, you know, it could happen, I suppose.”
I certainly wouldn’t rule out Isaacs playing the Grand Inquisitor in live-action at some stage given how many Star Wars shows are on the horizon and how far and wide they spread across the timeline, but I must say that, while I’d love to see it – I’m a big fan of Isaacs and have been for a long time – It’s really as Grand Admiral Thrawn I’d love to see him and I know I’m not alone as there is a lot of fan art (life that above and left) depicting him in the role.
But, given recent developments, it’s unlikely he will play Thrawn in live-action.
