We finally have a trailer for the Alita: Battle Angel, sorry, Blade Runner animated series, Black Lotus.
The first footage arrived last night and it certainly looks like they have captured the LA of Blade Runner’s future to perfection.
The series will be 13 episodes and will be directed by Appleseed’s Shinji Aramaki and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex’s Kenji Kamiyama.
The story focuses on Elle, voiced by Jessica Henwick, a female replicant, and it will be set in 2032 Los Angeles, between the two Blade Runner movies. It seems Elle is the Black Lotus of the title and she seems to be trying to find out who exactly she is and why she has all the skills of a spy/assassin. It also stars Will Yun Lee and Brian Cox.
The series will be set in 2032 and will feature pre-established characters from the franchise. This is ten years before the Blackout event when the world’s power grid went done, putting the whole world into chaos. The series will chronicle part of what happened between the two Blade Runner movies.
Worth noting is that Wes Bently will voice a young version of Niander Wallace Jr, the character played in Blade Runner 2049 by Jared Leto, so it’s going to be worth watching for the connections to the wider Blade Runner universe.
Aramaki previously worked on the Blade Runner universe as mechanical designer on 2049’s prequel short Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 which was animated by Sola Digital Arts who will be bringing us this new series.
Experience the future with BLADE RUNNER: BLACK LOTUS — an Adult Swim and Crunchyroll original animated series inspired by the award-winning and critically lauded Blade Runner movie franchise, coming this fall.
This thrilling thirteen episode series is directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama and produced by Alcon Entertainment and animation studio Sola Digital Arts, with Shinichiro Watanabe serving as a creative producer.
