Smallville star Tom Welling, the man who almost was Superman, has once again been talking up a possible Smallville sequel series with the original cast and creators set for returning.
We have been reporting on this for a while now with attention really being turned to Smallville again after Welling came back to the role of Clark Kent in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, bringing the much-loved series back to fans old and new and providing a good time for Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum to bring the animated show idea to the masses.
“I’ll tell you where it’s at,” Welling says in a new interview, “We need Warner Brothers and DC to let us do it. We’ve got Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar,] who are very busy doing a TV show called Wednesday. But they created Smallville, they want to write it. We just need to go ahead from DC and and Warner Brothers.
Rosenbaum once again discusses Smallville animated return: “When the time’s right…”
“So if you know anybody over there… because, listen, this is a passion project. It’s not going to be a blockbuster, it’s for the fans. All the actors want to do the voices of the characters – we’re all in. We just need them to let us use the property.”
But what about live-action? Welling played Clark Kent for the best part of ten years but never put the suit on and he famously was ok with that but it seems he now has changed his mind about; when asked if he would wear the suit in a new interview, the star gave a touching reason as to why he would do it now: “We have a bunch of [Halloween] costumes at home… The one costume we don’t have is the Superman costume. I asked my son why and he said, ‘Because he’s taken’ and I said, ‘By who?’ ‘By [you]’.”
We first reported on this animated idea back in 2021 when Rosenbaum revealed he and Superman/Clark Kent star Tom Welling were developing the show (here) and then in 2022 Welling updated the news, saying the plan was looking good and they were hopeful to get the original all the cast back (probably not ALL the cast at this stage, let’s be honest) and now Rosenbaum has revealed that he’s still hopeful but we might have to wait a while longer for it.
“We have Al and Miles [ Alfred Gough and Miles Millar], the creators of Smallville backing us up. When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time; we had the strike, we had a change of executives at DC — one being one of my best friends in the world, James Gunn.
“When the time’s right, I think it’s something that’s a no-brainer, unless they have other ideas. We’d like to do it — the whole cast would like to do it. They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is.”
There’s no denying that Smallville still has a big following and when Welling appeared in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths as Clark Kent a few years back, it was massive news for fans and, let’s be honest, had it not been for Smallville, there would never have been an Arrowverse, so it’s hard to argue with Rosenbaum’s ‘no-brainer’ argument.
Let’s just hope that James Gunn really is that good a friend and can see the vision of bringing the world of Smallville back to the fans.
